The Service Rifle Competition           (Previous Results)

 

The Service Rifle competition is a Club Championship Match, shot in two classes :

 

Classic - any CF rifle prior to 1955 design using the as fitted iron/battle sights – no verniers etc allowed - slings may be used but not bipods or bags – the winner gets the Service Rifle Trophy

 

Open - any CF rifle, any sights, with slings bipods etc – but whatever you use must remain fitted in every practice – winner gets standard First prize Glass.

 

Both classes are limited to :

  • only one magazine is permitted, to be carried on the person or fitted to the rifle in accordance with the individual course of fire

  • Reloading of the magazine, either in the rifle or separately is to be conducted singly without the use of stripper clips and similar devices

  • Slings may be in place when moving forward, provided that the rifle points down range at all times

  • Bipods to be stowed until in the firing position.

 

Course of Fire

 

Shot at one Figure 11 (DP1) target.  Note the sighters will be marked back individually.  Also, after each Practice (10 shot string) the target will be shown with all hits marked on the target – red spotting disk for each individual hit, white spotting disc where there is a group of more than one hit

Scoring:  Bull – 5 points, 4 points and rest of Figure 11 scoring surface – 3 points – inward scoring

 

Practice 1 – Rapid Fire

 

At 300 yards, shot prone – 5 minutes of sighters (the only sighters of the day) and 10 rounds to count – 1 exposure of 60 seconds

Procedure:

  • Competitors will start in the standing position, rifles loaded with 5 rounds and made ready with safety catch applied.

  • On appearance of the target for 60 seconds, competitors to adopt the prone position, release safety catches and fire 10 rounds

  • Scores will be communicated to the Firing point from the butts and spotting discs shown for 30 seconds

 

Practice 2 – 300 – 200 yards run down

 

300 yards prone, 200 yards prone

 

Procedure:

  • Competitors will start in the standing position at the 300 yard firing point, rifles loaded with 5 rounds and made ready with safety catch applied.

  • On appearance of the target for 15 seconds, competitors adopt prone position, release safety catches and fire 2 rounds

  • There will be three further exposures of 3 seconds – one round to be fired at each exposure

  • Competitors are to unload and show clear the rifle, and apply the safety catch.  Reload one magazine but do NOT insert in rifle, retain on person.  Remain in the prone position

  • The target will then appear for 1 second – this is the signal for competitors to stand up, advance to the 200 yard firing point, adopt the prone position, load and make ready

  • 30 seconds after the 1 second flash, there will be five exposures of 3 seconds each over a two metre frontage.  Competitors are to fire one round at each exposure

  • Scores will be communicated to the Firing point from the butts and spotting discs shown for 30 seconds

 

Practice 3 – 200 yards sitting – one magazine of 5 rounds

 

Procedure:

  • Start standing 5 yards behind firing point with rifles loaded with 5 rounds, made ready and with safety catches applied.

  • On appearance of the target for 60 seconds, competitors are to advance to firing point, adopt sitting position, release safety catches and fire 10 rounds

  • Scores will be communicated to the Firing point from the butts and spotting discs shown for 30 seconds

 

 

Practice 4 – 200-100 yards assault

 

Procedure:

  • Competitors will start in the standing position at the 200 yard firing point, rifles unloaded with safety catch applied

  • One magazine of 5 rounds and at least a further 5 loose rounds to be carried on the person

  • The 1 second flash of the target is the signal for competitors to advance to the 100 yard firing point remain standing, load with 5 rounds and make ready

  • 30 seconds after the 1 second flash there will be 4 exposures of 8 seconds – any number of rounds may be fired at each but no more than a total of 10 rounds.  The “away” time between appearances 1&2, and 3&4 will be approximately 7 seconds.  The “away” time between appearances 2&3 will be approximately 30 seconds to allow time to reload as necessary

  • Scores will be communicated to the Firing point from the butts and spotting discs shown for 30 seconds

 

 

Practice 5 – 100 yard double snap – kneeling and standing

 

Procedure:

  • Competitors will start in the standing position at the 100 yard firing point, rifles loaded  and made ready with safety catch applied

  • Targets will make 5 appearances of 6 seconds with an “away” time of 10 seconds (allows top up)

  • On first appearance of the target, competitors are to adopt the kneeling position and engage target with two rounds – remain kneeling. 

  • When targets make second appearance, adopt standing position and engage target with two rounds – continue to alternate between kneeling and standing for the 5 exposures

  • Scores will be communicated to the Firing point from the butts and spotting discs shown for 30 seconds

 

Total 5X rounds – 50 to count. Max Score = 250
